The ultimate buddy song, Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar made Yeh Dosti one of Sholay’s most popular numbers. Picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, the song was composed by R D Burman and written by Anand Bakshi.

Growing up, my father was never interested in films, or at least he pretended not to be. He viewed movies as a significant distraction and often criticized those who spent hours on end in front of the screen. Being married to such a man was never easy, but my mother chose peace and agreed to his cinema-averse policies. Yet, even in a household staunchly anti-film, my parents couldn’t escape mentioning Mehmood and his extraordinary legacy. I distinctly recall hearing phrases like “People would flock to watch any film if Mehmood was in it,” and, “He was a bigger star than the mainstream actors” from my anti-cinema, anti-fun father. I always wondered who this actor was that had compelled him to watch films.

Of the countless ‘child grows up to become the hero’ transition scenes in Hindi cinema, this must be among the most charming. We are a full 30 minutes into the 1958 film Parvarish . Two boys, Raja and Ramesh, have been raised together in a thakur’s house. Played by Raj Kapoor and Mehmood, respectively, in their first appearance as adults, we see the two performing for music teacher Banke Bihari, whom they call maama (uncle).

Director Mehul Kumar, who worked with Amitabh Bachchan on the film Mrityudaata in 1997, recalled how the superstar himself approached him for work at a time when his career was going through a difficult phase. In the 1990s, Amitabh hadn’t yet transitioned from lead roles to supporting roles, and had spent a lot of his time and resources on launching his ambitious ABCL venture. In the same year as Mrityudaata’s release, the company attracted negative press for unpaid dues following the Miss World pageant that it organised.
