In an interview with Tabish Hashmi on Hasna Mana Hai, legacy qawwal

In an interview with Tabish Hashmi on Hasna Mana Hai, legacy qawwal Mujadid Amjad Sabri harked back on his experiences with media exploitation as a child after the passing of his father, the renowned Amjad Sabri, in 2016.

Mujadid began by admitting that his whole family has been subjected to this ordeal. “Not just on channels, but even when we’d return home after a shoot, a reporting team would be waiting for us there,” he revealed. “We moved to Lahore for this reason. Between 2016 and 2017, I don’t think we spent a moment alone at home.”

The acclaimed Sufi singer was shot dead by motorcycle-borne gunmen in a central Karachi neighbourhood. Amjad, aged around 45, was travelling from his home to a television studio to attend an iftar transmission, when a motorcycle pulled up alongside his white Honda Civic and the two riders opened fire.

With Amjad’s family left mourning, the harrowing incident sparked an outpouring of grief nationwide. Mujadid was only thirteen years old at the time.

Islamabad High Court had issued notice to the singer and two TV channels for playing qawwali in a morning show making mention of some religious figures. The qawwali was deemed as offensive.

While the blasphemy case was registered against Geo News, the onus was put on the Ajmad Sabri and the lyricist for the blasphemy row by the advocate. Ban was sought on the qawwali that caused the row.

According to the Dawn newspaper, notices were also issued to Federal Information Secretary, chief executive of ARY, anchors Mubashir Lucman, Nida Yasir and Shaisata Lodhi, chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) and Chairman Cable Operators Association of Pakistan.

One of Pakistan’s best-known singers, Amjad Sabri, was gunned down Wednesday in the city of Karachi, in what police are calling a targeted killing.

The attack occurred when the 45-year-old Sabri was on his way to a television station, where he was scheduled to give a performance to mark the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The TTP Hakimullah Mehsud group — aka the Pakistani Taliban — has claimed responsibility for Sabri’s death, saying that they carried out the assassination “for blasphemy.” If members of the Pakistani Taliban did carry out Sabri’s assassination, it would be the latest in a string of high-profile attacks; the group has also been accused of being the force behind the assassination of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, in 2007, as well as the infamous shooting of schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai in 2012.
